Environmental Technologies
The Environmental Technologies and Services industry in Shropshire is incredibly diverse, highly profitable and growing rapidly.
Increasing pressure and awareness of environmental issues, climate change and the environmental economy are supporting the growth of the environmental sector nationally and is a particular growth industry to the Shropshire economy.
There are a strong cluster of over 200 businesses in the sector located throughout Shropshire that have developed a strong reputation with their sustained success in this growing field of work. As well as the high rates of new business start up, growth in the environmental sector is high. This is reflected in 79 per cent of companies reporting growth in turnover over the past three years in a recent survey of over 60 environmental firms based within Shropshire. The highest growth has been recorded in the areas of environmental consultancy, waste management and energy efficiency/renewable energy sub-sectors.
Shropshire Environmental Technologies Network (SEtNEt) was formed in 2006 to support and develop the concentration of environmental businesses in the county. The aim of the network is to bring together companies in the county that work within the field of environmental goods and services and to develop the sector through networking opportunities and support for supply chains. Members of SetNEt meet monthly for 'Green Drink's' – an informal opportunity to discuss issues and business opportunities.
This sector has considerable prospects for future growth, driven by strong market drivers such as UK and EU environmental policy and regulations and increasing attention on issues such as climate change and rising energy costs.
